Just like Admiral Ackbar, the Ackbar Semillon is a true veteran in the Konpira Maru ranks. First produced in 2016, it has shown a constant stylistic evolution, yet its most loved characteristic of being a versatile, thirst quenching wine has remained.
True to form 2022 has provided us with yet another iteration which remains true to the vines whilst showing a new perspective in the wine. Texture and salty oxidative layers add depth not seen before but the citrus, fresh cut herbs and driving acidity remain.
We love this wine and it is quite possibly the last we will produce. So get in quick and raise a glass to one of our stalwarts and one of the true galactic heroes.
Site: Quarry Ridge Vineyard, Kilmore, Victoria.
Production: 100% Semillon. Destemmed ensuring whole berry remained and left in the press for 2 days on skins. Grapes were then pressed long and slow and juice transferred to stainless steel and kept below 20 degrees celsius for ferment. Matured in stainless for 6 months before being transffered to old French oak for a further 8 months. Underwent partial malolactic fermentation during the aging period. Unfined and unfiltered with small addition of sulphur the only addition made. 10.5%
Tasting notes: Nicely developed this one after its longer than usual maturation in old oak. Ripe citrus and pear with notes of fresh herbs and a salty oxy feel. Honeyed palate with crisp acidity and just a touch of textural tannin on the mid palate. Best enjoyed with a slab of Gruyere.
